83rd Annual Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film Award

Call for South African Entries – Deadline for submissions: 31 August 2010 16h00
South African filmmakers are invited to submit their feature films for consideration into the 83rd Annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Awards for Best Foreign Language Film Category.

To be eligible for entry, films must have been released in South Africa for a period of at least seven consecutive days beginning no earlier than October 1st 2009 and no later than September 30th 2010.

Entries are to be hand delivered to the National Film and Video Foundation by Tuesday 31st August 2010 16h00.

The entries will be judged by the South African selection committee and the winning film from this initial judging phase will go forth to represent South Africa in the Academy’s initial nomination phase for Best Foreign Language film.

Foreign Language Film Award Guidelines.

A foreign language film is defined as a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.

The Academy uses the following guidelines to determine a film's eligibility in the Foreign Language Award category.

1. Citizens or permanent residents of the submitting country should be represented in at least two of these categories.

  • Producer(s)
  • Director(s)
  • Writer(s)

2. Citizens or permanent residents of the submitting country should be represented in the majority in these categories:

  • Cinematographer
  • Editor Art Director or Production Designer (whichever title designates the senior designer)
  • Costume Designer
  • Music Composer
  • Sound Mixer

3. Citizens or permanent residents of the submitting country should be significantly represented among the major roles in the cast.

Eligibility

  • The film must be first released in the country no earlier that October 01, 2009, and no later than September 30 2010 and be first publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial cinema.
  • The film must be advertised and exploited during its eligibility run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry. The film need not have been released in the United States.
  • No type of television or Internet transmission may have occurred at any time prior to the film's theatrical release.
  • The recording of the original dialogue track as well as the completed film must be predominantly in a language or languages other than English. Accurate English subtitles are required.
  • The academy will make the final determination in all questions of eligibility.
