3rd BRICS FILM FESTIVAL – CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSION

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) invites South African filmmakers to submit their films in the following categories short films, documentary or feature fiction films to screen at the 3rd BRICS Film Festival from the 19th -29th July 2018.

BACKGROUND

South Africa has assumed BRICS rotational Chairpersonship for 2018, succeeding the People’s Republic of China. The year 2018 completes the first decade of BRICS Summits. South Africa will host the 10th BRICS Summit and the 3rd BRICS Film Festival. The 3rd BRICS Film Festival will be the main focus at this year’s Durban International Film Festival (DIFF)that will be taking place from the 19th – 29th July 2018.

3rd BRICS Film Festival will recognise the following awards: Best Film (Producer/s), Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editor, Best Cinematography, Best Composer/Music, as well as Special Jury Award from submitted feature films.

Competition and Non-competition: During the period of 5 days there will be screenings of 25 films: 5 films from each country, 2 Feature films for the competition section; 3 for the non-competition section.  Films can be in the following categories: 

  • Feature/Drama (90min to 120min)
  • Documentaries
  • Short films

The statue award will be the Golden Rhino: inspired by the history behind the golden rhino that was discovered in Mapungubwe, the significance of the place, the linkages with other countries in earlier century. In China it was the Panda award.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Films submitted for competition section should be productions between the years 2016 and 2017.
  • Feature films of which the length should be between 90 min and 120min.
  • Films that already participated in the 1st and 2nd BRICS Film Festival are not eligible for submission.
  • All films should be submitted in English or English subtitled.
  • All films will be submitted to the Film and Publication Board (FPB) for classification.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • The work should carry a compelling narrative.
  • The film will be judged using the following criteria: uniqueness/originality, professional quality (production value and style), aesthetic quality (design, composition, colour/tones), concept and compelling story.

DISQUALIFICATION

  • Films with gratuitous violence.
  • Any submission that has poor quality, or an incomplete submission.
  • Age inappropriate films.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Full synopsis of the project
  • Production year
  • Details of key creative team i.e. director, producer and main cast
  • High resolution poster (300dpi)
  • Trailer / promo
  • High resolution production stills

Filmmakers should bear in mind that the NFVF and DAC reserve the right to select the films to be presented at the film festival.

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, 25 April 2018. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE CONSIDERED.
