The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) call for funding applications for Production – Animation Short Films is open

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), is pleased to announce that the call for Cycle 2 funding applications for the 2022/2023 financial year is now open for the following funding category:

    • Production: Animation – Short Films

Individuals, companies and organisations may submit funding applications to the NFVF solely this funding category. Specific conditions are applicable for each funding category, and it is important for applicants to take careful note of these conditions before submitting an application. Below are important definitions in the context of this funding category:

Animation:

An audio-visual artform, which uses successive images (both created and photographed) to create the illusion of movement when shown as a sequence. This may include, but is not limited to, cell animation, computer animation, stop-motion, clay animation, pixilation, cut-outs, pins, camera multiple pass imagery, kaleidoscopic effects and drawing on the film frame itself.

Short film:

A fiction or non-fiction audio-visual production, with a duration of at least five to a maximum of forty minutes.

The funding caps are as follows for this category:

Short film (animation) R    550 000 Tiers: 1 and 2
R    350 000 Tier 3

Opening date for submissions:           12 December 2022

Closing date for submissions:            20 January 2023 at 17h00.

Please take note of the following disclaimers:

    1. Tier yourself accordingly
    2. Carefully read the definitions of the sub-categories before selecting
    3. It is advisable that the main applicant applies instead of using a 3rd party to apply on their behalf
    4. Only recently certified documents will be accepted. (WITH A DATED STAMP NOT OLDER THAN 6 MONTHS FROM DATE OF APPLICATION)
    5. Only valid documents will be allowed (DOCUMENTS THAT ARE NOT EXPIRED)
    6. Applications which do not meet compliance will be disqualified
    7. Applications submitted for funding categories outside of the one specified above will be disqualified.

Tier breakdown:

Tier 1: Experienced filmmakers who have a proven track record for developing and producing 3-5 theatrically released feature films.

Tier 2: Filmmakers with limited experience but who have developed and produced 1-2 theatrical feature films, television fiction, documentaries, 2-3 short films and/or commercials seeking to venture into feature film development and production.

Tier 3: New entrants into the industry, particularly recent film school graduates from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. This intervention is geared towards first time filmmakers having a “calling card” in the film industry. This tier is only eligible for short film funding.
